Bologna Children's Book Fair, Italy

In mid April we returned from our fourth promotional exhibition of Australian picture books and their creators on the Australian Publishers stand at the Bologna Book Fair in Italy.

It was an interesting book fair again this year with a strong focus on digital publishing.

A day seminar was held on this before the fair began and a 'digital café' area was included for the first time – quite near our Australian stand.

The International Youth Library, Munich, Germany

After the Fair we visited the International Children's Library in Munich, Germany, in the beautiful Bavarian Schloss Blutenburg.

This very special library had its beginnings soon after the end of the Second World War.

It was started by a visionary German Jewish woman, Jella Lepman.

Further work by Jella led to the foundation of IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People).

Prague, Czech Republic

On route back home, we spent a few days in the beautiful city of Prague.
How lucky were we to have the best guide in the city!

We visited just long enough to interrupt the working pattern of our friend Isobelle Carmody who lives here with her family for at least half of every year.

Isobelle showed us all around the beautiful city, from castle to clocktower, over the bridge lined with dark sculptured creatures, along cobbled lanes to fabulous grand plazas and nooks and crannies, past weird statues -from icon to icon, a couple being the best pastry shops or restaurants in the city!

Closer to home, we were invited to present at the 2012 AISWA (Association of Independent Schools of Western Australia) Conference held in Broome – April 23 to 26.

This conference is held each year for principals and teachers of remote schools in Western Australia.

Our sessions focused on using art as story - as a stimulus for developing illustration and text – and based on workshops we have held in remote schools over the last few years and closer to home.
