Australian Book Industry Awards were announced on May 21 and we
congratulate all winners – of the children’s sections in
Judith Rossell for her novel Withering-By-Sea, published by Allen & Unwin winning the award for Book of the year for older children (8-14).
Jane Jolly, author, and Robert Ingpen illustrator for their picture book Tea and Sugar Christmas, published by National Library Australia, winning the Small Publishers’ Children’s Book of the Year Award. And;
Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton for their 52 Storey Treehouse,
published by Pan Macmillan, winning not only the award Book of the Year
Younger Children (0-8) but the overall Book of the Year Award!
We are so
proud, as all these books were represented internationally a month
earlier at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, as part of the Hello! from Australia exhibition.
And how fantastic for children’s books in Australia, that a children’s book took out the major award this year! Hooray for The52-Storey Treehouse by Andy Griffiths & Terry Denton, Pan Macmillan.
This is another tangible acknowledgment that Australian children’s
books are doing so well – in fact they are currently the major success
story of the Australian Book Industry. This is something to sing about
and our Children's Laureate, as a key spokesperson for the children's
book industry nationally and internationally, does just that.
The Children's Laureate position, was established
in 2012 with the appointment of the Inaugural Laureates, Alison Lester
& Boori Monty Pryor (2012-2013) and followed by Jackie French (2014-2015) who was also awarded Senior Australian of the Year 2015!
The 2016 to 2017 Australian Children's Laureate will be announced early next year.
Funds are needed for the next Laureate term to keep this fabulous program flying. So, we urge you to join the campaign: Love your Laureate Raise the funds needed and keep the momentum going!
