Early Childhood Conference
This conference was organised by AISWA (Association of Independent Schools of Western Australia) over June 19 & 20 in Fremantle WA. The theme was Creativity with special keynote presenters Paddy Beels from Wingate Community Nursery School in Durham UK and Kirsty Liljegren, teaching director of Cornish College Early Learning Centre, Victoria.

Books Illustrated presented a session ‘Cooking up Picture Book Fun’ as well as a hands on workshop providing recipes for creating pictures.

It was a thought provoking and stimulating conference – questioning us to reconsider many established procedures in our current education practices and to recognise new ways of providing the best opportunities for children’s development in these important early years. We came away with our new favourite word ‘Slowliness’ and a feeling of excitement, and relief, that a real focus on Early childhood seems to be developing momentum!
Inaugural Indigenous Literacy Foundation Spinifex Writers Camp
Ann James has just returned from being part of the inaugural Indigenous Literacy Foundation Spinifex Writers Camp, hosted by Tjuntjuntjara School in one of the most remote communities in Australia. It’s in Spinifex country in the Western Desert and this was her second visit.
She said "I was excited to see familiar faces and places – and all those dogs again! One goal was for the kids to create illustrated stories to be published by the ILF. The kids realised great results and are so, justifiably, proud of their and their friends’ achievements. Though making the books was a focus, they were actually the catalyst for a much bigger story..."

HeARTlines Children's Literature & Book Illustration Festival
It was great, while in WA, to see Western Australian illustrators Frane Lessac and James Foley in action in a 'draw-off, at this festival event - a musical anteater was the focus for this one! You can view the exhibition here.
