SCHOOL HOLIDAY EVENTS
Visit Books Illustrated over school holidays on one of our three Open Days (or make an appointment). We have the Possum Magic original artworks and preliminary drawings by Julie Vivas on show. This
is a rare opportunity to also see the developmental work for this
classic Australian picture book created 30 years ago! Did you know that
Hush the possum was originally a mouse?
Open Days are -
Wednesday 3rd July: 11.00am - 5pm
Friday 12th July: 11.00am - 5pm
Saturday 13th July: 11.00am - 5pm
(why not come and see us after or before a visit to Gasworks Arts Park to see the Possum Magic Musical Performance.)
We will also have some original artwork by Julie on display and for sale from her picture book Davy and the Duckling, written by Margaret Wild, published by Penguin Books. This is also a rare opportunity to purchase original illustrations by this well known illustrator.

MARC and MACC are mobile librarians and
art/craft teachers who drive all over Victoria visiting schools, they
particularly focus on small rural school that might only have one
teacher or wouldn't have a town library. The MARC/MACC program has been
deeply valued not only by the teachers but by the students as well.

James and Ann Haddon presented a day-long professional developmentnt
workshop on Thursday June 16 ... here is a photo of some of these

Announcement of the 2013 Wildnerness Society Environment Awards for Children's Literature
The announcement was made at 6.30pm on Wednesday June 5 at Readings Bookshop in Carlton, Melbourne.
Alison Lester, Australian Children's Laureate and co winner with Coral Tulloch of the award last year for One Small Island, was guest speaker.
The awards were accepted on behalf of
the winners by Kate O'Donnell (Hardie Grant Egmont), (Alison Lester
guest speaker), Angela Curruthers (Scholastic Australia) and Ann Haddon
In the Preschool category, writer and artist Sally Morgan took home the award for The Lance Dance, published by Little Hare/Hardie Grant Egmont - a book about creatures losing their habitat and our need to protect it.
The Primary School category was won by writer Margaret Wild and illustrator Vivienne Goodman for Tanglewood, published by Omnibus Books/Scholastic Australia. The
story is about relationships - the relationship between a tree and
a seagull and nature, as well as exploring the nature of relationships,
loneliness and belonging.
One of the judges of this year's award, multi-award-winning children’s author Jackie French, described The Last Dance as beautifully illustrated, this book is another in a long series of books about extinctions, and why they occur. She describedTanglewood
as “breathtaking in its beauty and simplicity, this book shows both the
web of life, ecology and friendship. The understated analogy between
the interdependence of a simple ecology as well as a social network is
glorious in both concept and execution. This is an extraordinary book,
joyous, transcendent and profound.”
A wonderful new giclee print is currently being printed from Tanglewood - check out our website for it's arrival!

Saturday 27th July
us to celebrate a brand new scary picture book illustrated by
Mitch Vane and written by Danny Katz , A Book About Scary,
published by Five Mile Press.
A Book about Scary is an A to Z of Scary -- from Alien Zombies
to being in bed in the dark (zzzzzz). This is a very tongue-in-cheek
look at all things scary, from the traditional (fear of the dark) to the
quirky (sticking your hand in a letterbox).
Mitch has been working as a freelance
illustrator for over twenty years now, five of those based in London,
and over those years working in a variety of mediums, on a variety of
jobs - anything from storyboards, posters, package design, colouring
books, cartoons, editorial illustrations and paintings. She's
illustrated a lot of children’s books with many different publishers
both in Australia and in the U.S. This is Mitch's first book with Five
Mile Press Australia.
Meet Mitch 1 to 3pm - have a book personally signed and see how she created the illustrations for this book.
