China for Bejing Writer's Week in March, and to Bologna Italy,

Kid's Antarctic Art at Newcastle Region Library - 17 January to 23 February, 2013
It's been a privillage for Books
Illustrated to have been the Touring Agent for this very special
exhibition over the past three tears. The final leg to the four year
National Tour will be at Blacktown Arts Centre until February 2. This
Venue adds an extra dimension with an exhibition of artwork of
children's artwork inspired by Jeannie Baker's collage art and pictures
books. It's a wonderful opportunity to visit if you are in Sydney over
A truly collaborative and inspiring project by Alison Lester with children from around the world has resulted in this marvellous exhibition of paintings curated and toured by Books Illustrated.
In 2005 Alison travelled to Mawson Station as an Australian Antarctic
Arts Fellow aboard the Aurora Australis. Every day of the six- week
voyage she sent an email to schools and families around the world,
describing her experience. Children responded to her stories with
marvellous pencil drawings. Following her trip she created paintings
from these drawings.
The exhibition now includes illustrations from two picture books also inspired by this Antarctic trip - Sophie Scott Goes South (Penguin Books) and One Small Island (Penguin Books)
While the exhibition is on, Alison Lester, award-winning storyteller
and inaugural Australian Children's Laureate, will be a focus artist of The Big Draw Newcastle on Friday 25 January 2013.
Alison will be leading drawing
workshops in the Newcastle Region Library foyer – all are welcome to
join in the creation of an Antarctica-themed wall mural inspired by
Alison’s adventures to the very south of the globe. Throughout the day
Alison will be giving drawing demonstrations to inspire kids and
families to get involved; drawing, stencilling, collage and wax resist.
Come along and join in!
The Big Draw is the world’s biggest
celebration of drawing, beginning in the UK in 2000. In 2013 Newcastle
will attempt the first large-scale collaboration of a Big Draw event in
