Jackie French is the next Australian Children's Laureate!
The announcement and induction ceremony was held at the National Library in Canberra
on Wednesday Nov 27. It was followed by an event at the Wheeler
Centre in Melbourne on Friday Nov 29 - a celebration of our inaugural
Laureates, Alison Lester and Boori Monty Pryor who will soon
be concluding their term. They each gave fabulous accounts of their past
two years - the huge number of children they've worked and played with -
and we were all inspired by the enormous impact they've made
on children's lives and their families and communities. Jackie French
followed with her impassioned speech, giving us a sense of her vision
for her two year term and the energy she'll be bringing to it!
The event was also a fundraiser for ACLA (Australian
Childrens' Literature Alliance) who runs this program. Authors,
illustrators, booksellers and publishers all generously donated items
for a silent auction that raised over $9,000. There were also wonderful door prizes and many many happy Gala-goers went home happy and enriched in many ways indeed. It
is intended that more fundraising events will be held in various
states over the next two years to support the laureate program.
Books Illustrated was honoured and fortunate to have a celebratory lunch with Jackie in between her two major events!
And Jackie signed some books for us, so now we can offer these to you …

National Treasures: A Bob Graham Retrospective, The Lu Rees Archives and the CBCA Conference, 2014
We are, with colleague Nicky Lo Bianco, curating a retrospective exhibition of the work of Bob Graham. As Bob has donated much of his original artwork for his books to the Lu Rees Archives,
this exhibition's aim is to showcase two national treasures: Bob Graham
through his legacy of manuscripts and illustrations created over his
thirty year career so far; and the enormous and continually growing
Lu Rees Archive of Australian Children's Literature.
We are actually growing fond of Canberra after our several trips there for research! The exhibition will be shown first at CMAG (the Canberra Museum and Art Gallery) from May 16, to coincide with the National CBCA Conference, Discovering National Treasures,
and will it continue through to Children's Book Week in August.
Bob will open the exhibition with a floor talk … so this is certainly a
date to record in next year's diary … in fact it's a great saving to
catch the early-bird registrations!!
