On the Road and in the air …
Books Illustrated has been on the road, and in the air, for the last
few weeks with exhibitions and projects overseas. Details can be found
on our blog, but in summary -
First stop was China.
In Nanjing we were hosted for a week by the very enthusiastic and generous team working at Oriental Babies Publishing, looking at projects and possible collaborations.

In Beijing, starting on Thursday March 3, we installed our ‘Hello! from Australia’ exhibition at the Capital Library
and ran a planned program of workshops for children. Over the weekend
workshops were attended by the general public, while during the week,
they were attended by groups of school students from local and
international schools. This program was planned in conjunction
with the Beijing Writer’s Week which this year had a focus on children’s
books and publishing. Special guests from Australia invited to take
part in the program were author illustrators Anne Spudvilas,
Ambelin Kymullina, Alison Lester and Ann James, along with
Children’s Literature academic Pam Macintyre. They took part in an
information night forum held at the exhibition. Another event at
the venue which was a major part of the Writer’s Week program this year,
was attended by Australian and Chinese publishers. Our week in Beijing
was frenetic, and we experienced extreme weather, from thick pollution
and smog to an unseasonal dump of snow … which made a visit to the great
wall quite special!

The Bologna Book Fair followed during the last week of March. As well as celebrating the 50th
anniversary of this important Book Fair, we were privileged to have our
inaugural Australian Children’s Laureates, Alison Lester and Boori
Monty Pryor, attend this year and spend time each day at our
promotional exhibition on the Australian Publishers stand. They took
part in a highlight of the Fair – the Summit for Laureates, alongside
two Irish Laureates and the Swedish Reading Ambassador. Following this
initiative, the Book Fair Committee is keen to continue to support the
encouragement of other countries to establish their own Laureates, and
to include a Summit for Laureates in the Book Fair program every second
Following a visit to Melbourne late last year by Roisin McDonough, Chief Executive of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, our Laureates were invited to visit Ireland for a promotional Laureate tour to follow the Bologna Book fair.
The Books Illustration exhibition set up team - Mandy Cooper, Justine Alltimes, Ann James and Ann Haddon.
It was once again our privilege to
accompany Alison & Boori on this four day tour to Belfast, and Derry
in Northern Island and then on to Dublin in Southern Ireland. The Irish
organisers were truly generous and thoughtful hosts and the tour went
very smoothly with Boori and Alison taking part in interviews, talks and
workshops in all three cities. We left enthused by the possibilities
for continuing collaborations and work towards the promotion of the
Laureate position internationally. A big thank you to the Arts Council of Northern Ireland for their generosity and the team at Children's Books Ireland.
